Nuovo Kickstarter di Lex Arcana: arrivano Italia e Dacia e Tracia

Lex Arcana - Dacia e Tracia(also available in english language)

New Kickstarter for Lex Arcana for the expansions “Italia” and “Dacia and Tracia”.

With the announcement of the next Kickstarter campaign dedicated to Lex Arcana, Quality Games has given substance to the hopes of the many fans of the game, both in Italy and in the rest of the world. The players were already asking for new geographical modules, especially a reprint / new edition of Italia; and we have just been informed that this module will be paired with a new one, dedicated to Dacia & Tracia.
Aware of the importance of such an announcement, we took advantage of the kind availability of Quality Game team, and shoot them with a (very friendly!) burst of questions and detail requests.
Here is the interview to Valerio Ferzi (Chief Operating Officer), Andrea Angiolino and Francesca Garello (authors of the module Italia) e Mauro Longo (author of the module Dacia & Tracia).

Gioconomicon: You have just announced the second Lex Arcana Kickstarter campaign, by Quality Games. This time you will focus on two important geographic modules: Italia and Dacia & Tracia. Why you chose these two expansions?

Valerio Ferzi: Just as in the first campaign, we thought to create a continuity with the first edition, by publishing one of the most loved expansions, and at the same time also something never seen before – and, we hope, similarly exciting for the gamers. We worked hard to expand the “Italia” book, and we also did a lot of research for the “Dacia & Tracia”.
They are two antithetical expansions when it comes to the thematics included, and we are very happy with the results.

Gioconomicon: The original Italia was published almost a quarter of century ago by Nexus Editrice, and back then it represented a turning point in the geographical modules, due to the extensive description of the territory and the details included, very soon becoming a “cult” for the aficionados of Lex Arcana. What will you do for this new edition? Are you thinking about an integration with the already published Aegyptus module?

Francesca Garello & Andrea Angiolino: More than integrated with Aegyptus, the 1997 book was edited to have the same structure. In fact, in the ‘90s, the module Italia – Land of Ancient Enchantments was a sort of revolution in the geographical modules of Lex Arcana, being more complete respect to the previous modules. This is the foundation on which we created the standard of the new edition’s modules, reviewing its scheme and expanding it. The first edition of Italia counted around 300,000 characters, while the new edition counts almost 800,000. The research work has been quite hard, especially for what concerns history and legends of the pre-roman Italy, that are more represented here respect to the previous edition. The book will be divided into five parts: the first part being the original text with new details and the description of the Regions in which the peninsula was divided. A small section of the former edition has been used for the second section, which has almost all new material, and concerns the Gods; in the first edition, we only mentioned the Etruscan pantheon, while here we will give a comprehensive view of the cults of all the peninsula. The third and fourth parts are much more technical, with a lot more in-depth content: while the first edition had some rituals and items from the Etruscan tradition, the new edition will cover new rituals, new indigitamenta, magical items and stuff from stories, myths and legends from the whole Italian peninsula. The bestiary has been expanded, too, with new animals, monsters and creatures. The fifth section includes the adventures…

Gioconomicon: the first edition of Italia included two adventures. What will there be i this new edition? Will you use the same adventures, changing them? Or will there be new ones?

Francesca Garello & Andrea Angiolino: the adventures sections has been the one with the least changes. We have reviewed the two adventures from the first edition to adapt them to the new rules, but the story is the same, in substance, even though we are working on a new, original adventure. But the rest of the book is so packed of new contents that we did not have space to insert the new adventure, unless by removing some of the new game contents. Therefore, we will use the new adventure in another occasion, in order not to sacrifice important information and new rules.

Gioconomicon: The module Dacia & Tracia is completely new, instead. Mauro, you’re the author: are you drawing inspiration from Italia or Aegyptus to compile the new book? Is there some sort of coordination among the authors to create some standard for all the modules of this kind?

Mauro Longo: Absolutely. Since the first geographical module, Aegyptus, we decided to give a common structure to the new expansions: terms, exposition, narrative order, chapters order, new monsters, adventures. My Aegyptus started from this framework, that we also used in both Italia and Tracia & Dacia. Furthermore, we decided to stick on an idea we had two years ago: each module should have its own atmosphere and well-recognisable themes, different for each Province. In fact, Aegyptus is strongly contaminated by Lovecraft-style atmospheres; Italia is a land of intrigues and schemes; Dacia is full of gothic horror (just think about modern Transilvania: what comes to mind?); and Tracia is under the constant threat of war and hordes from beyond the border.

Gioconomicon: Dacia & Tracia is about a very large territory, inhabited by very different people respect to Italia. How are you setting up the job, in terms of sources and ideas? Will you introduce campaigns that will develop in both the Provinces?

Mauro Longo: I worked for about 15 months, studying and preparing the module, also using my background of Roman historian and archaeologist. I wanted, as stated before, to characterise the two territories, each according to its “main theme”: so Dacia is full of dark creatures from its tradition (Dacia is roughly today’s Romania and Hungary), while on the Thracian limes the Hun hordes with Attila and his successors are poised to invade. There are two adventures ready, one for each territory, but we kept open the chance to expand the module with a section on Scythia, the land beyond the border, and a specific adventure. Both these add-ons will be accomplished should the crowdfunding campaign succeed.

Gioconomicon: The authors of the original system are not included in these two modules. What creative and validation processes Quality Games have set up for these expansions? And will the original authorial “quadrunvirate” (De Toffoli/Colovini/Maggi/Nepitello) review the work?

Valerio Ferzi & Andrea Angiolino: In full respect for the game authors, they have the right to approve each product of the line, even if they are not involved in its writing. However, the process include a first draft by the expansion’s authors, supervised by Quality Games art board. So we have a double check, both by a technical reviewer that checks the game rules, and by our archaeologist Francesca Garello, who checks coherency with the historical-uchronic setting of Lex Arcana. Finally, we check the language: an editor works on the original language (Italian or sometimes English), a translator for the other language, and a second editor to check the translation. Meanwhile, the artists and our illuminated cartographer, Francesco Mattioli, work on the illustrations, together with the whole editorial staff. Then we finalise the layout and correct the final drafts, together with some of the best trained players and members of gaming clubs. Their contribution is very important to have a final product as well edited and error-free as possible.

Gioconomicon: After the first successful kickstarter campaign, that brought back to life Lex Arcana together with a large set of expansions, you start a new crowdfunding campaign. Can you confirm that this will be the standard practice you will follow as Quality Games for all your games? Or at least for any Lex Arcana material?

Valerio Ferzi: Crowdfunding is a well-established microfinancing practice in our sector, and this goes beyond saying. For realities such as Quality Games, more a game studio than a firm that creates, produces and sells games, it’s almost necessary to adapt to crowdfunding. And we should also take into account that Kickstarter is a huge advertisment machine towards those countries that didn’t know about Lex Arcana in the first place. This has been a winning strategy, and so we will not abandon it.
But not all of our projects are good for this kind of platform; therefore we will evaluate, on a case by case basis, the output channel for our products, including expansions for Lex Arcana.

Gioconomicon: can you anticipate any upcoming stretch goal, just to raise our attention towards this new campaign? And, by the way, when will you start the campaign?

These are confidential information. All that we can tell is that more than new items, there will be new contents during the campaign.

Gioconomicon:The production management from the first campaign faced several difficulties, that caused, in turn, delays in fulfillment. Based on this experience, which corrections will you adopt for the new campaign?

Valerio Ferzi: We have definitely learned from our mistakes, and set up a creation and production pipeline trying to have an efficient, harmonised process. This is a complex work, because is in two languages: in the first campaign we had more than 50 persons working on it, and coordination wasn’t easy.
Yet we learned from all this: we estabilished standards and set up an ad hoc productive process, dedicated to Lex Arcana; we will not make the same mistakes again. For the new campaign we have already started to work in earnest: we are already paginating the books, and the artwork is about 60-70% complete.

Andrea Angiolino:This will surely allow us to control the fulfillment times. I would like to add, however, that in our last campaign the delay was caused both by the pandemic and the unexpected success of the campaign! We have collected about five times more than any other Italian RPG on Kickstarter, setting a new standard for those who came after us. Therefore we were forced to add new, unplanned stretch goal during the campaign, and thus manufacture more items than planned. The job grew up both in dimensions and complexity. We also wanted to add more things in the pagination of the volumes, and in the end backers received a richer game. Judging by their comments, I would say they liked it.

Gioconomicon: concerning the Italian market, your decision not to renew the relationships with Need Games as licensee for Lex Arcana left some fans perplexed. Some are afraid that this will bring a decrease in quality of the products that up to now were top notch in the Italian edition. Would you please help us to clarify? Who worked on the Italian edition of Lex Arcana until now? And how will you work out the two editions (Italian and English) in the future?

Valerio Ferzi: The quality of the final products has very little to do with the rescission of the contract with Need Games: it’s just that, since we started, we have changed both the operative and the business models. In this framework, the contract with Need Games has not been renewed after reaching its natural end.
The team behind the first volumes of Lex Arcana is unchanged. As happened with the first products, we will work with the Italian edition at first, since it has the longest ext, and therefore it needs to be paginated first; then we will move to the English edition, that instead will obviously need a careful editing and review.

Gioconomicon: Can we expect some more products by Quality Games during this year? What about Malavita?

Valerio Ferzi: May I have the right to remain silent? Well, joking aside, we are working on some stuff but it’s still too early to make any announcement. About Malavita, we had to reschedule it, and I just can’t tell more.

And with this final cliffhanger we reach the end of our long yet very interesting interview to our friends of the Quality Games team, that we heartfully thank for their availability.
We are sure to have arousen your curiosity, and so just keep listening to be informed of any new development of the next Kickstarter campaign, hoping that the time to play together Lex Arcana around the same table will come soon, so to live new, exciting adventures with the Cohors Auxiliaria Arcana.
